The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department along with the Medical Reserve Corps of Santa Barbara County hosted a free flu shot event in the City of Goleta that yielded record community participation. Thanks to the efforts of community partners in spreading the message of yesterday's event, nearly 800 community members received a flu shot, approximately 300 more vaccines than previously given at this annual event!

On Thursday, October 18, 2018, Santa Barbara County Animal Services received a call of a sick horse dumped in the 6000 block of Dominion Road in Santa Maria. When Animal Control Officers arrived they were led to a Bay Thoroughbred mare, approximately 16 hands tall, very thin, with open abscesses on her neck, swelling on her abdomen and chest, and a few abrasions on her back. The mare was transported to an equine veterinary hospital for care and her prognosis at this time is guarded.

The Santa Barbara County Public Works Department encourages residents to compost their Halloween pumpkins rather than throwing them into the trash. Food scraps (including pumpkins) deposited at the landfill generate methane, but they can also be used to improve your landscape.

The decedent whose body was discovered around 9:30 a.m., on October 20, 2018, near the surf line just east of the Camino Del Sur beach access in Isla Vista has been identified as being 20-year-old Alessandro Esquivel from Downey California. Next of kin has been notified. A final cause and manner of death is pending toxicology and lab results.

Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today the sentencing of Donald Paul McCaffrey on misdemeanor charges of hit and run and resisting, obstructing, or delaying a law enforcement officer.

The deadline to register and be eligible to vote in the November 6, 2018 General Election is Monday, October 22. If a voter has moved or changed his/her name, they must update their registration by completing a new voter registration form.

The suspect wanted for a burglary at Decker's Brand Showcase in Goleta on October 10, 2018, is in custody thanks to an anonymous tip and follow up investigation by Sheriff's deputies.

–Since the beginning of the current school year there have been several burglaries reported to the Isla Vista Foot Patrol where the suspect entered through an unlocked door or an open window. Most recently, a burglary occurred in the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive late Saturday night October 13, 2018. The suspect entered an occupied residence through an unlocked side door.

For more than 25 years, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office has received federal grant funding through the Domestic Cannabis Eradication Suppression Program, administered by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The purpose of the grant is to provide financial assistance to local law enforcement agencies to help eradicate illegal marijuana cultivation sites.
